Types of Voice Surgery Offered at SFENTA

Microlaryngoscopy. Microlaryngoscopy is a diagnostic test that involves examining the vocal cords using a thin, lighted instrument called an endoscope. If a mass or tumor is found during the examination, it can be removed with lasers or endoscopic surgical tools.

Medialization laryngoplasty. This procedure is performed to treat problems with a vocal fold. It is commonly recommended for patients suffering from vocal cord dysfunction due to a neurological condition.

Reduction laryngoplasty. A reduction laryngoplasty is done to alter the shape and position of the Adam’s apple, resulting in a thinner and more feminine aesthetic.

FAQ: Is Voice Surgery Safe?

When performed by an experienced ENT specialist, voice surgery is extremely safe. However, all procedures carry a degree of risk. With voice surgery, the primary risks include:

  • Anesthesia complications
  • Unintended injury to the vocal cords
  • Scarring of the vocal cords
  • Infection

Before surgery, your SFENTA™ physician will review the potential complications with you and ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks.

What to Expect After Surgery

Rest your voice

You will need to rest your voice completely for at least three days after surgery. That means no singing, speaking, whispering, or clearing your throat.

Drink plenty of fluids

Throat dryness after voice surgery is very common. To combat this side effect, stay hydrated with at least eight glasses of water a day.

Breathe in steam

Take a hot shower or inhale the steam from a bowl of hot water for several minutes to moisten your airway and relieve any discomfort.
