How Allergy Shots are Used

An allergy shot is an injection that contains a small amount of the item you are allergic to. This could be allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or bee stings. Your provider will inject your upper arm with the shot once or twice a week, with the dosage gradually increasing. These injections will continue over a period of several months. Over time, the number of injections will decrease and there will be more time between injections. The final stage is to receive a maintenance injection once a month. During the process, you will begin to feel a reduction in your allergy symptoms — or begin to no longer feel them at all.

Allergy shots are used for specific types of allergies; primary environmental allergies. They cannot be used to treat food allergies or allergies to medication. Some allergens that can be used include:

Pollen
Pet dander
Dust mites
Mold
Bee venom

Who is a Candidate for Allergy Shots?

A SFENTA provider can determine if you would be a good candidate for allergy shots. During your visit to SFENTA, a specialist will review your allergy symptoms and medical history to recommend the best course of treatment.

Most candidates are patients with chronic allergies whose symptoms last for three months or more each year. The treatment can only accommodate specific types of allergies including pollen, dust, and mold.

Patients who are interested in allergy shots should also be able to commit to long-term treatment in order to achieve the best possible results.

Your Treatment

Allergy shots work in stages and begin with injections once or twice a week (for several weeks). Your tolerance to the allergen will continue to grow and the dosage will gradually increase. As you continue with the treatment, you will require injections less often — starting at every 2 to 4 weeks, and then just once a month. During the process, you will experience a continuous improvement in your symptoms. Over time, they may even disappear completely. Some patients experience minor side effects from the injections such as redness or swelling.

Patients should finish the treatment in order to see the best possible results. While you may experience some relief after the first few injections, it will take more to build up a lasting tolerance.
