While medications are often designed to help us feel better, some patients can be allergic to them. Certain medications may cause some patients to experience abnormal symptoms stemming from a drug or medication allergy.

SFENTA provides drug allergy testing to help prevent and detect allergic reactions due to medications. Our staff can also evaluate previous diagnoses to ensure you aren’t avoiding beneficial medications. Some of the most common drugs tested include penicillin, antibiotics, pain medications, and more.

How Testing is Performed

Before testing can begin, you will meet with one of our highly trained allergy providers. During your initial evaluation, you will discuss your allergy history, the medications you are currently taking or are concerned with, and what your symptoms are after taking medications. While some patients have suspected medications they are allergic to, it’s not a requirement for testing. Our staff can help determine which medications to test and the proper form of testing. Our tests include skin prick, patch testing, and oral tests, among others. These tests are performed in our offices with one of our allergy providers.

Your Testing Experience

Your testing experience will depend on the type of test used. Some of the most common forms of testing include:

Skin Testing

A small prick or injection will be made in the skin. A drop of the medication will then be placed beneath the skin and monitored for any reaction. Some reactions include bumps, redness, or itching. Your provider will be able to determine the degree of your allergy based on the size of the reaction.

Patch Testing

During this test, a small amount of the drug is placed in a chamber and attached to the skin for 48 to 72 hours. The provider will then remove the patch and examine any reactions to the medication. This test is designed for tracking delayed allergic reactions.

Oral Testing

After other tests have been used, an oral test may be administered. Oral testing involves patients ingesting small amounts of the medication and gradually increasing the dosage. This continues until a reaction has been found, or until you have shown a substantial tolerance to the medication.

In some cases, other tests may be used which may be due to the type of medications being tested or your suspected allergies. Once the tests have been completed and your provider has reviewed the results, they will discuss if you can safely use the medication or help you find a suitable alternative.
