Which allergies can be treated with allergy shots?

Allergy shots are effective in treating various environmental allergies, such as seasonal and indoor allergies.

While they aren’t used to treat food allergies, allergy shots can help desensitize you to triggers such as:

  • Mold
  • Pollen
  • Trees
  • Grass
  • Weeds
  • Dust
  • Insect venom
  • Pet dander

What do allergy shots do?

An allergic reaction is your immune system’s response to a foreign substance. When your immune system encounters a foreign substance, it creates antibodies to fight it. These antibodies may cause a runny nose, itchy skin, coughing, wheezing, or swollen eyes. In many cases, the trigger may be a harmless part of your environment. Allergy shots can help train your immune system not to react. Instead of merely treating the symptoms of allergies, allergy shots treat the underlying cause.

How will allergy shots improve my symptoms?

For the first few months of your treatment, you’ll visit SFENTA in Aventura once or twice weekly to get your shot. Your shot will contain a tiny amount of a specific allergen, such as mold, dust, or pollen. Your shot will contain enough to cause an immune response but not enough to trigger an allergic reaction. Little by little, your doctor will increase the dose of your shots. Your immune system will build up a tolerance and get used to the allergen. In time, this reduces your allergy symptoms.

How often will I need to get shots?

When you’ve been getting weekly shots for a few months, your doctor will reduce the frequency of your shots to about 1-2 shots per month. After about 4-5 more months, he will further decrease this until you’re getting them once a month. We usually recommend monthly shots for 3-5 years.

How long does each treatment take?

You should expect each appointment to take approximately 30 minutes. Your allergy shots will be administered subcutaneously, typically in the upper arm. As the needles are tiny and short, pain or discomfort is minimal. You may experience redness or swelling at the site of injection. This is normal and should subside within a few hours.

When will I start to notice results?

This will vary from patient to patient. Allergy shots are a gradual treatment, typically taking about six months to a year to notice significant improvements.
