Skin tests for allergies are the quickest, easiest, and most affordable method — and they’re more reliable than blood tests. Blood tests are ideal for patients with sensitive skin who can’t tolerate skin tests.

Blood Tests

Blood allergy tests look for specific antibodies that are in your blood. We will simply draw a small amount of your blood and send it to the lab to look for allergy-related antibodies to complete this test.

Skin Tests

Skin allergy tests involve placing a small amount of a potential allergen on or beneath the skin to see if a reaction develops.

Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for allergy testing are those with chronic allergy symptoms. This could include skin reactions such as rashes or hives, as well as other effects including runny nose, congestion, sneezing, or coughing. Our providers will determine if allergy testing is the best course of treatment for you or if another option is more suitable.

Your Allergy Test Experience

Blood allergy testing is performed by drawing a small amount of blood and sending it to a lab to look for allergy-related antibodies.

The most common blood allergy test is enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, which measures the level of immunoglobulin E in your bloodstream. Higher levels of this antibody are often present in people with allergies or asthma.

Here’s what to expect when you arrive at SFENTA for your skin allergy test:

The site of the test (either your back or arm) will be cleansed thoroughly
Small drops of potential allergens will be placed on your skin
The skin will be pricked with a needle, allowing each allergen to penetrate beneath the surface — or we may inject the allergen directly into your skin
After about 15 minutes, your skin will be evaluated for red/itchy areas
If a reaction develops on your skin, it means that you are possibly allergic to that substance

Which allergy testing method is right for me?

Your provider can determine which method is best for you, but the skin testing method is most commonly used. Blood tests are performed on those who have sensitive skin who cannot tolerate the test.

Is there any downtime following the allergy test?

No. There may be some minor discomfort, swelling, or redness at the testing site, but you can resume your regular activities.

Do I need to stop taking medication before testing?

Yes. Our providers will discuss which medications to avoid before your test, and for how long. Patients should cease using beta blockers in coordination with their doctor to ensure it’s done safely, as these medications interfere with testing.
