Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the immune system. The lymph nodes’ job is to protect the body from infection by filtering viruses and bacteria and stopping them from spreading. In order to completely protect us, there are hundreds of lymph nodes throughout the body.

In some cases, bacteria or a virus can infect the lymph nodes, which leads to swelling. This occurs primarily in the lymph nodes that are found in the armpits, groin, and below the chin. The infection must be treated in order to treat a swollen lymph node. At South Florida ENT Associates, our providers are experts at determining the cause of swollen lymph nodes, and will provide treatment to help them return to their standard size.

Your Treatment Options

The treatment for swollen lymph nodes is decided after determining the cause of the swelling. In many cases, the cause of a swollen lymph node is an infection. If it’s a bacterial infection, your provider will prescribe antibiotics. These will help treat the infection and return the lymph nodes to their normal size.

In some cases, a swollen lymph node may be due to cancer. If your provider is concerned about this, they may request a biopsy. During a biopsy, a piece of the lymph node will be removed and analyzed for cancerous cells. If cancer has been detected, surgery or other treatments will be required.

Why do Lymph Nodes Become Enlarged?

The lymph nodes filter germs and bacteria that pass through the lymphatic fluid. They are clusters of cells that are found in groups across the body. Each of these groups is responsible for draining a specific area of the body. Infections are the most common reason for an enlarged lymph node. In some cases, these infections can run their course without treatment and the lymph node will return to normal size. In other cases, the infection requires treatment to have the lymph node return to normal.
